What’s up with the mountaineering and running photos?

When I got clean and sober in 1982, I assumed my life was ruined due to my addiction and I will never have fun again. Then a mentor told me if my recovery had any hope of succeeding, I must learn how to have fun without any booze or dope. “No way! That’s impossible!” were the first things out of my mouth. I am so glad I was wrong. It turned out that I had so much energy (or maybe I was ADHD), I got myself involved in so many activities at San Diego State, weightlifting, volleyball, yoga, gymnastics, running, triathlons, and best of all, climbing. When I moved to Colorado, I was encouraged to join the Colorado Mountain Club(CMC) and take their beginning and advanced mountaineering schools. Soon after I became a volunteer for the advanced mountain school. I like to say my new dope has been climbing mountains and running marathons all around the world.

As I advanced in my psychotherapy skills, I noticed my clients progressed significantly when they engaged in more physical activities. Granted, they don’t have to do the extreme things I engaged in (unless you want to), they just need to get outside and notice how their body responds to the outdoors. It’s a groovy feeling noticing nature and pushing your body to do a little more. Hence the pictures on this site are about me, sharing my experience, strength, and hope. And making the claim: you can have fun without the use of any mind-altering chemicals.

Danny Shearer has been working in the field of psychotherapy and addiction for over 40 years. He graduated from San Diego State University, receiving his BA degree in Psychology in 1985 and MS degree in Counseling in 1988. Danny started college as a theatre art major, which did not pan out due to his addiction to mind-altering chemicals and his crash and burn. He switched to psychology in his early recovery. While in San Diego, Danny was the director of several out-patient addiction treatment programs in the 80’s and 90’s. In 1999, he gave up his surfboard, grabbed a pair of hiking boots, and moved to Colorado. Danny has worked for behavioral health facilities in Boulder and Ft. Collins for the last 18 years. He currently maintains a full-time private practice. He also provides training and lectures on Trauma and Recovery. Danny became a certified yoga instructor in 2008. Danny is currently drafting a book titled, “Stacking the Odds Toward Long Term Recovery.” He has been abstinent from all mind-altering chemicals since 1982. Danny is still an excitement junkie and has run 49 marathons, several ultra-marathons, and climbed 90+ mountains over 14,000 feet. Ice climbing and skiing is his Winter dope. His Mexican heritage has made him a phenomenal cook. Ask him about his homemade salsa and mole.
